Built in 1903 steps from the Saint-Jean Gate, the Théâtre Capitole is one of the oldest theatres still in operation in Canada. Designed by American architect Walter S. Painter in a flamboyant Beaux-Arts style, it quickly established itself as the heart of popular cultural life in Quebec City.
A century of history in stone
At its opening, the Capitole welcomed the great vaudeville and variety troupes touring North America. Its ornate facade and richly decorated interior made it one of the most beautiful performance halls in Canada. Over the following decades it was converted into a cinema, a role it held for much of the twentieth century before falling into gradual decline.
Classified as a heritage building by the Quebec government, the theatre was saved from demolition through a major restoration undertaken in the early 1990s. In 1992, the Théâtre Capitole reopened fully renovated, reclaiming its original vocation as a performance venue while gaining the technical equipment of a contemporary stage.
Beaux-Arts architecture in the heart of the faubourg
The Théâtre Capitole's facade is one of the most striking on rue Saint-Jean. Corinthian pilasters, sculpted entablature, large arched bays: Walter S. Painter deployed the classical codes of the Beaux-Arts style with an ornamental generosity that stands apart from the sober facades around it.
The interior carries the same spirit: coffered ceiling, Italian-style balconies, gilding and sculpted details evoking the golden age of great North American theatres at the turn of the twentieth century. With approximately 1,260 seats spread across the orchestra and balconies, the hall offers an intimacy and acoustic warmth that are rare at this scale.
Programming rooted in entertainment
Since its reopening, the Théâtre Capitole has specialized in mainstream entertainment: tributes to international pop and chanson icons, musical comedies, stand-up comedians, variety artists and pop-rock concerts. The venue regularly hosts productions by Gestev, one of Quebec's leading live entertainment promoters.
« A theatre that survived an entire century to be reborn more alive than ever. »Théâtre Capitole, since 1903
Its strategic position — at the corner of rue Saint-Jean and Place d'Youville, steps from the city walls — makes it a natural destination for both Quebec City residents and visitors discovering the city.
At the crossroads of Old Quebec
The Théâtre Capitole enjoys a unique setting: just outside the Saint-Jean Gate, it is a short walk from Old Quebec and surrounded by the restaurants, bars and hotels of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighbourhood. An evening at the Capitole fits naturally into a night out in one of the city's most vibrant districts.
